You are talking about a procedure (same sex marriage) that is only just developing. There is no need for any couple to conform to any of the established protocols if that does not suite them.

In my area is a marriage celebrant who’s very services is designed to not follow established protocol.
Well that is to say if the couple want it, he is not going to say, no that is wrong because people do it another way. His service allows the couple to do things as they wish, No restrictions. (Other than minimum requirements by law.)

As for protocols. Here is an example.
Traditionally the boy would ask the girls father if he can take her hand in marriage.
If the father says no, then its not on. I guess then the boy would work hard at correcting what ever it was that dear dad did not like. Yet this is just one of many traditions that today is all but dead.

In the case of same sex marriage, if they wish to use an engagement ring then so be it. If not then so be it. Its not all that important.

Some men give family crest rings (if your family has a crest that is) as a symbol of welcoming them into the family.

There are many rings with a stone that are suitable for men to wear. You can call any of them an engagement ring. It doesn’t have to be the typical diamond solitaire that so many females wear.

If I get married or even civil union for that matter, I will get my husband what he would like. I would probably get him a nice gold band with a onyx stud or something in it. I love onyx, it’s one of my favorite stones.
