Centerpieces are a great way to incorporate atmosphere into your reception. In addition, they tie in your wedding theme, which is great for an Irish one like yours.

Ballroom weddings tend to run a bit more formal, and usually have elegant table settings. Try to choose centerpieces that are either:
1. Reflect the elegance of the affair (think grand floral displays)
2. Tie in your theme (Vases filled with shamrocks, green florals, green stones, floating candles, etc.)

Centerpieces don't have to be expensive if you do it yourself. I would suggest maybe buying vases, filling them with flowers, or colored stones, water, and candles that fit in with your color scheme.

Or, an even more inexpensive way to decorate your tables is to use luminaries with cut outs. They're elegant and cast a soft light over your table. PWPOnline.com has a lot of great luminaries that could work well with your theme:

Another idea would be to buy a festive basket, bowl, or container and fill it with Celtic wedding favors, which takes care of both centerpieces and favor placement. PWPOnline.com also has some great Irish favors:

Congrats and hope this helps!

How about decorating the tables with rose petals and a classic candelabra?

If you ask the venue where you are holding the reception they will probably have the candelabras already, use coloured candles to match the wedding colours.

If you want an Irish themed centrepiece, shamrock in pots or use the green of the Emerald Isle, I think anything too themed could look out of place.

More centrepiece ideas here

I think it's best to keep ballroom receptions classic and simple. Or at least elegant if you are going to go extravagant. I *personally* would not go crazy with the centrepieces and add shamrocks, green confetti, green candles, etc. That does not really fit the decor. You can still have Irish music, food, dancing, etc. but your entire room does not have to scream "Blarney Stone". ;)

You said that your bridal party is carrying roses. Why not extend that theme to the tables? A simple classic red rose (perhaps in a green glass vase) would be elegant, inexpensive, and timeless. To be honest, people don't notice the centrepieces anyway unless you go over the top and get a $ 400 per table flower arrangement (which would be nice too, but how many people want to/can spend that?).

Also, I'm not sure about Irish tartans, but I'm Scottish and I know that they typically have red in them. So that would carry your theme. Or you can go with red roses in clear glass vases. If for some reason you REALLY wanted to go green, you could ask your florist to "dye" some white roses green or get silk roses. I have no idea how this would be done, but I'm sure there's a way.

I think that the best way for centrepieces to NOT look tacky and cheap is to keep it simple and sleek.

In my opinion, don't waste a lot of time worrying about this. Red roses would be the best option in my opinion.

Good luck!

Edit: If you are using WHITE roses, then that would be great! Add some greenery, and you're done!

no they aren't that important unless you make them important. of course you want a centrepiece but it can be as simple as a vase of fresh cut daisies or as elegant as all get out.
i often suggest to my brides their centrepieces be fairly simple and inexpensive - after all they generally end up in the garbage - one of my favourite centrepieces is a glass bowl filled with werthers candies and the bowl surrounded by candles or fairy lights. the candies are wrapped in gold and sparkle very prettily in the light. this centrepiece serves a dual purpose - it is a centrepiece and if you absolutely insist on having favours for guests then it works for that as well. you simply put a pretty little organza bag at each place setting and the guests help themselves to the candy! it works well, its cost efficient, and you rarely have any leftovers. a bag of werthers is roughly nine dollars and one bag fills each bowl!
you can use almost any candy that is individually wrapped - lindor chocolates is another great one to use, individually wrapped in colourful foils they are very pretty as a centrepiece as well.
whats important about this day is this - you are marrying the man you love. as my mum always said "all you need for a wedding is the happy couple, the minister, a couple of rings and a licence - everything else is just frosting on the cake"
good luck and have a grand wedding!

You should have something at the tables, but not a lot of time and energy should be put into the centerpieces because the most guests will say about them is, "Oh, how nice" and move on.

Personally, I hate floral centerpieces. Everyone always opts for the huge floral arrangements with the candelabras, and they all look the same (and they're boring).

We're using branches in a vase because our reception room overlooks a wooded area, and then lots and lots of candles.

Use candles, and you're room will exude romance, class and warmth, which is perfect for any wedding.

I didn't have any centrepieces at my wedding. It would just have made more work and more clearing up to do afterwards. But the shamrock pot ideas sound lovely.
