The only people affected by the legalization of gay marriage are those who wish to get married. No one else.

The children argument is getting really old. News flash: Your child doesn't "become" gay. No one "becomes" gay. You are or you aren't. What happens with marriage wont have any affect on the inevitable realization that your child will have regarding their sexuality.

I was raised in South Texas by an extremely conservative family and had never met a gay person, let alone seen one before. And what do you know? I'm gay...and last time I checked, my 4-year-relationship hasn't done anything to anyone yet and neither would a marriage.

the only way it affects the average person is if that average person wants to marry someone of the same sex otherwise it doesn't

and to djthrenody189
you are correct in saying that love transcends everything but thats not the issue for most gay people that want to get married. the difference between the civil union and a marriage is the legal staus you get. lets say me and my boyfriend have been together for 30 years(all he can be to me in the state i am from is a boyfriend) and he gets deathly sick and is in the hospital. by law the hospital can keep me from seeing him cause i am not a family member or his "wife". that to me is wrong no matter how you look at it. and it doesn't have to be a grave as death. it can be something as simple as heath insurance. as it stands right now i can't be placed on his heath insurance and he can't on mine all because we are gay and cant get married. there are just so many legal things that come with marriage that we miss out on. i know i speak for just about every gay person when i say that no gay person wants any religion to be forced into marring anyone they dont feel they should. we just want the US government to give us that same legal protections that come with marriage regardless of what they call it civil union or marriage

Gay marriage isn't going to affect straight marriages in any way. Those that claim it goes against the "sanctity of marriage" are lying to themselves. Adultery and divorce have ruined the "sanctity of marriage."

Also, those that claim gay marriage is against the Bible don't know what they are talking about. If they were that educated with their Bible they'd realize that there are two instances of gay marriage in the Bible--believe it or not because it's true, but many don't realize it and aren't taught it in their church!

Check out I Samuel 18 on up and read carefully. Also, some translations aren't the greatest as the Bible wasn't translated correctly, but it still gives a clear picture. However, knowledge of what certain words meant in Biblical times is important to get anything out of the text.

Sorry to give a bit of a sermon but I'm tired of hearing people talk about how the Bible is against homosexuality when the Bible was not translated correctly. For instance, many quote Leviticus 18:22 as "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination."
It's actually translated a bit wrong, but it's easy to see how it got messed up because this is the correct translation, "And with a male, thou shalt not lie down in a woman's bed; it is an abomination."

What was the abomination were two men in a WOMAN'S bed because back then a woman's bed was sacred and the only man that should touch a woman's bed was her husband.

Again sorry for the sermon, but I'm tired of all the nonsense concerning this issue and those bringing up the Bible when they don't even have the knowledge of the Bible as it was translated wrong in many instances. Another quick example, many are raised to believe Jesus was a carpenter. That is false! The word that was translated into carpenter actually meant a person that worked with their hands. Jesus was most likely a mason--worked with stones. It doesn't take a genius to realize that part of the world still doesn't have all that many trees and they don't seem to have an over abundance of wood.

I think it is really just the average person admitting that there are all types, maybe it is just less exclusive. Or maybe it makes one question their own marriage. People do love to avoid thinking.

Very little and that is the problem.

It takes momentum to change something, meanwhile thanks to inertia it takes very little to keep something static. So since it affects so few people it is very hard to generate the momentum necessary to change the laws. The fact that we've gone as far as we have shows a great deal.

Fortunately much like inertia, momentum once gained is very hard to stop.

It really shouldnt have any impact upon them at all, i mean, what is letting two people who love each other, get married, really going to hurt? Nothing whatsoever.

The only plausible reasons i can see are all religious. And as far as im aware, the average person in the population, isnt necessarily a fundamentalist.

I find that the real question is why do gays and lesbians want it. As a gay man I obviously may or may not be inclined to enter a serious relationship, just like anyone else. The choice comes down to a private commitment ceremony, a civil union, or a marriage. Can we all agree that the difference between marriage and a civil union is where it's held? Has the GLBT community forgotten that love can never be shackled and that is what the institution of marriage has become? There are reality shows selling off bachelors for the most cutthroat maenad, for goodness sake.

By disallowing something like this (something that is based on a double standard), I think everyone responsible loses out on furthering the human race by decreasing bigotry.
